The Orthopedic Regional Anesthesia Boot Camp offers the most intensive course in a clinical setting. Join the NYSORA team in a one of a kind opportunity to learn about peripheral nerve blocks and orthopedic anesthesia in NYSORA-EUROPE affiliated Center for Research Education and Enhanced Recovery (CREER) at a major teaching institution in Genk, Belgium. We are extremely excited and proud of this program and remain grateful to the leadership of ZOL for their commitment to education and letting us contribute to the growing recognition of ZOL as a leader in education in LRA.
This two-day Orthopedic Regional Anesthesia Boot Camp is the most intense and clinically oriented training program anywhere. Participants will join the NYSORA team in patient care, US-guided block administration, orthopedic anesthesia administration, scanning, and ultrasound anatomy recognition.
In this age of information overload, the new data published in the medical literature is fragmented, often confusing, and can be overwhelming to process or make sense out of. Reading information is one thing, but applying it to the actual practice can be difficult. Yet, to be successful, one needs to feel inspired, feel the joy of learning and tap into one’s inner strength, commitment and courage. The Orthopedic Regional Anesthesia Boot Camp program is designed like no other educational experience. In addition to the first-hand medical instructions, this course is also a primer in LEADERSHIP and MOTIVATION. The intimate nature of the course fosters confidence and the feeling of accomplishment that leads to driving to apply what you have learned.
The course allows ample time for one-on-one discussions, ideas brainstorming and most importantly, seeing the actual principles and teachings applied in clinical practice. We are immensely proud of this program and our leadership that facilitates the scheduling and education, as this program has helped NYSORA and CREER-ZOL gain another level of recognition for clinical education, but in a real-life scenario, something that is remotely removed from many other workshops.
*Note: The participants will not administer the actual procedures or have a patient-contact, but will be allowed to observe all procedures live in consenting patients.*
The Orthopedic Regional Anesthesia Boot Camp is structured to give participants a back-to-back training on all aspects of orthopedic regional anesthesia from premedication, selection of regional anesthesia procedures, regional anesthesia administration, intraoperative management, and postoperative care. Training will fluctuate between interactive didactic lessons in between the cases, to review the pertinent technique details before and after each regional anesthesia procedure. NYSORA’s team will also include an additional expert who will assure that all participants receive sufficient personalized, one-on-one training.
Participants will join the NYSORA team administering between 15 and 30 nerve block procedures in patients. Nerve block procedures reviewed are interscalene, supraclavicular, infraclavicular, and axillary brachial plexus blocks; fascia iliaca, femoral nerve, femoral triangle, adductor canal, popliteal, ankle block, forearm, and cutaneous blocks.
While the actual operating room program will dictate the type of blocks performed, the participants are likely to see the majority of all the mentioned procedures. The ultrasound-guided epidural and spinal anesthesia will be part of the training curriculum. Throughout the two days of this intense preceptorship, any available time between procedures will be used for additional supplementing didactic training and questions and answers.
All participants will receive an international certificate of successfully completed clinical preceptorship by NYSORA.
Orthopedic Regional Anesthesia Boot Camp topics
- Bullet-proof medical-legal documentation of regional anesthesia procedures
- Hands-on technique and clinical demonstration of monitoring of peripheral nerve block procedures
- Demonstration of needle nerve contacts and maneuvers to inject local anesthetic safely
- Clinical examples (in patients) of local anesthetic distribution that leads to safe and successful peripheral nerve block procedures
- Step by step standardized approach to most extremity block procedures
- Selection of specific local anesthetic mixtures and additives for specific patient and surgery scenarios
- Anatomy pattern recognition in patients and models throughout both days of training
- Access to a multitude of patient management protocols
- Understanding of multi-modal analgesia protocols for total knee and total hip arthroplasty
- 3-D anatomy and NYSORA’s Reverse Ultrasound Anatomy programs
Our newly created orthopedic surgery center performs twenty to forty peripheral nerve blocks daily to facilitate intraoperative anesthesia, postoperative analgesia and rapid recovery for approximately thirty patients having orthopedic surgery. The NYSORA affiliated CREER center has developed one of the best orthopedic anesthesia programs in Europe that have increased our orthopedic efficiency by decreasing the turn-over time between cases to five minutes or less. The cornerstone of these advances has been implementation of routine use of peripheral nerve blocks for most distal extremity surgery. Resultantly our annual peripheral nerve block volume currently is over 4,000 nerve block procedures per year.
Participants are likely to see the regional anesthesia management of the following common orthopedic surgery procedures:
- Shoulder arthroscopy
- Rotator cuff repair
- Shoulder replacement
- Elbow surgery
- Upper and lower extremity trauma surgery
- Wrist, hand and forearm tendon surgery
- Hip arthroplasty
- Acetabula surgery
- Knee replacement surgery
- Patellar tendon surgery
- Ankle arthroplasty
- Wide variety of foot and ankle and hammer-toe reconstructive surgery
Our surgeons are some of the best in the country, published and international leaders and innovators in surgical procedures and regularly teach scores of national and international visitors who you are likely to encounter during your preceptorship. This unique educational opportunity is designed for participants who are seeking the most practical training program and acquisition of skills and confidence in ultrasound-guided orthopedic regional anesthesia in the shortest possible time.
Whether you are in a need to jump-start the US-guided regional anesthesia program in your hospital, need additional skills or have a need for techniques tune-up or confidence-booster, this is the most practical and time-efficient program available anywhere.
